A Tradition at Risk
June 23/2018

When you think of Maldives, you think; Beautiful sandy beaches, jaw dropping waters, extravagant resorts and an abundance of palm trees. To some extent, this is true but in 2017, Maldives faced a crisis during Ramadan with a lack of coconuts causing a huge spike in its prices. Prices were soaring like never before in the Maldives, and for a country that is so reliant on King Coconuts and Small Coconuts, this is quite a large issue.

So why is this happening in the Maldives? It's due to a majority of reasons one of which being a low supply of young coconut businessmen in the Maldives. Since the beginning of this beautiful nation, climbing coconut trees and providing for your family through this industry was the norm. However, as the western influences have been slowly embedded into our DNA we have grown further away from our traditions. Opportunities opened up and a nation once so dependent on just fishing and coconuts has flourished and become the prime tourist destination of the world. Nonetheless, we shouldn't stray too far from the past, we should never forget our roots. The ways of our ancestors are still carried on in certain islands but if more youngsters get involved in utilizing the abundant palm trees for their source of income, and begin importing coconuts into the capital city and around the archipelago, we might never have to face a crisis as we did back in 2017.
